Free php spinner!

<div class=\"postavatar\">free-php-spinner</div>

A while ago a friend of mine, an SEO guy, told me about the concept of 'spinning' content. Basically the idea is to get many articles out of one article, by adding replacement words or phrases to the one article you write. Then, every time you refresh the page, the same - but different - article is displayed. It's mostly a way to confuse search engines into thinking you have more content than you do, but sometimes it's useful; E.g. if you have a summary of an article which is ripped straight from the main article, you might get a duplicate content penalty from Google every time it looks at your site.

It's always struck me as odd than nobody seems to have written anything (freely available anyway. $97? Bugger that!) for such a simple task, so I thought what the heck, I've got an hour or two, why don't I write it myself? So I did, and here it is;

Hits vs Visits, or “How to ask for website stats without sounding old”

<div class=\"postavatar\">hits-vs-visits-or-how-to-ask-for-website-stats-without-sounding-old</div>

"How many hits do we get?"

This question is almost as prevalent as the "How do I make a site" thing, but it's a lot more dated. If uttered by a marketer, it instantly shows their age as nobody actually asks about 'hits' anymore if they know what they're talking about.

I'll break down the terms first so you know what I'm talking about, if you don't already.

Google learns to read text in Flash files – What’s it mean for SEO?

<div class=\"postavatar\">google-learns-to-read-text-in-flash-files-whats-it-mean-for-seo</div>

Google have just announced that their world famous flagship product... you know, the search thing... can now read text elements inside flash files embedded on websites. They've been working hard alongside Adobe to get their new algorithm working, and Adobe seems to be similarly open to the idea as I'm sure it's one of the most requested feature updates from web developers ever since the term SEO actually started standing for something.

“How do I make a website” Part 1: Domains and Hosting

<div class=\"postavatar\">how-do-i-make-a-website-part-1-domains-and-hosting</div>

I get this question all the time, usually from small business owners or friends of friends at parties. I've been doing it for so long now that it's just second nature to me, but I guess to other people it's shrouded in a cloud of uncertainty though. Anyway, here's a very simple step by step guide to getting a website up so that when you type in www.whatever.com your site will show up.

(Keep in mind this is a very low level version, if you have any problems you will have to talk to someone who knows more about your specific situation.)

Google is not a person.

<div class=\"postavatar\">google-is-not-a-person</div>

I've been using the term 'Google' as a personification lately, and until today I hadn't realised just how often I think or speak as such. For those not in the know about my job, I'm in the business of making websites. Most of my sites involve some degree of Search Engine Optimisation (or Optimization for you yankee's, or site-make-get-traffics for you Bernard Blacks out there.) and its been getting more and more ingrained into my thought process than ever lately.

Offline Task Management Sheets

<div class=\"postavatar\">offline-task-management-sheets</div>

I've made my task sheet designs available for download today, as A4 and Letter PDF files. A few people have commented on how much they like the layout, so you might like them. I've been tweaking these for years and they fit my usual work style perfectly. They're most useful for people who prefer physically checking a box and being able to keep a relatively clean log of their work in a binder or folder (hence the bigger left margin).

There's two versions available below, the first is the one I use the most - it's a sheet-a-week style task list with a 'major goal' up the top and daily tasks on the side. This one's the best for people who get a fairly large amount of 20 - 90 minute tasks and need to have them listed somewhere safe. It will work the best if you print out a few, and fill one out each monday morning (transferring anything you didnt get to over from the last one) and then keeping the old one in the back of your folder.

The second one is similar, but has less emphasis on a time frame. Basically you can fill it up, then when it's full, replace it.

You'll need a PDF viewer to view them, but who doesn't have that these days?
